TEMPO Interactive, Mataram:A team of Indonesian students emerged as champion of the 2008 International Mathematics dan Science Olympics (IMSO) in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, yesterday.
Winning eight gold, 29 silver and 44 bronze medals, the Indonesian team defeated elementary students from 10 countries, namely Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Nigeria and Sri Lanka.
Valentine Sudaryo, who won in the Best Experiment category, was one of the gold medalists. IMSO coordinator Elvira told reporters after the medals were awarded that Indonesian children really showed their best performances. Last year, the Indonesian team won six gold medals.
Elementary and Secondary Education Management director-general Suyanto said the department will also reward the winners, "We will help them continue their studies to a higher level," he said.
