TANGERANG: The regency administration will carry out raids at several international schools to weed out foreigners violating their tourist visas by working illegally as teachers.
"We believe that a number of foreign tourists have violated the regulation," said Gatot Gunapria, chief of the supervisory department at the regency's vital statistic and demography agency, Thursday.
He said at least 15 foreigners had overstayed their tourist visas, working as teachers at international schools like Global Jaya, Jakarta Japanese School and the British International School in Pondok Aren district.
The agency will update their data after the raids.
Pondok Aren district chief Chaerudin said he knew about schools employing teachers without work permits.
"Foreigners who work as teachers are usually facilitated by the schools where they teach so that they can stay longer in the country," he said.
