Vice President Jusuf Kalla received Monday an honorary doctorate from Japan's Soka University for his contribution to world peace and conflict resolution.
According to Soka University rector Hideo Yamamoto, Kalla's contribution to conflict resolution in Indonesia was noteworthy, citing his efforts in brokering a peace deal between the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian government, as well as conflict resolution efforts in Poso and Maluku.
"That [conflict resolution] is the biggest contribution to human development and culture," Yamamoto said, as quoted by Antara news.
Meanwhile, in his presentation, Kalla reiterated the need for trust building and the avoidance of controversial issues that may spark conflicts in working towards peace.
"The root problem of the conflict in Maluku and Poso is political, whereas the issue with Aceh is economic disparity," he said.
"Peace is beautiful, and is the capital to development. Indonesia's success can be used as template for conflic resolution the world over," Kalla added. (amr)
