Danish Couple Celebrate Wedding Anniversary by Watching Indonesian Antigraft Protests

A Danish couple celebrated their wedding anniversary by watching the International Anti-Corruption Day rally in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The couple, Benjamin and Alice, who provided their first names only, watched the rally in front of the Indosat building on Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat in Central Jakarta. Benjamin said he and his wife had heard about the rally from the news and were excited to see it.

“It’s crowded but we’re not afraid of riots,” Benjamin told detik.com

The couple said it was their third time visiting Indonesia and demonstrations had greeted them on every one of their journeys. They first visited Indonesia in 2004 and were welcomed by a massive labor rally.

“That rally was quite chaotic so I left for home two days later,” Benjamin said.

Two years later they returned to Indonesia and were greeted by a huge rally protesting the arrival of former US President George W Bush.

However, they were not deterred from returning to Indonesia by the protests. For their third visit, the couple arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday and soon learned about the planned anticorruption rally. This time they were ready.

“I wanted to see the rally but I read there would be heavy traffic delays so I hired an ojek,” Benjamin said.

The couple hired two ojeks to take them around Jakarta for the day.
