A chapter of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the highest Muslim authority, in East Nusa Tenggara said Saturday that Muslims were ready to help guard Christmas in the province with a majority of Christians and Catholics.
“We are ready to give support for our Christian brothers by securing the Christmas holiday in Kupang,” Jamaludin Ahmad, deputy chairman of the MUI chapter, told Antara news agency.
Jamaludin said that they would assist security officers guarding churches and managing traffic during Christmas masses.
MUI, he said, would coordinate with youth Muslim organizations, including Mosque Youth, GP Anshor (a movement affiliated to Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama) and the Islamic Students Association (HMI), in the plan.
He also said that MUI would coordinate with Kupang Archdiocese and the Timor Evangelical Church (GMIT) Synod.
Last year, Muslims also helped secure church services as peaceful Christmas celebrations took place across the archipelago.
