TEMPO Interactive, Surakarta: The Chinese Minister of Trade, Chen Deming, visited Surakarta to look at various Surakarta batik collections yesterday afternoon.

He acknowledged that he was impressed with the various motifs, including the traditional way of making batik.

“Very impressive,” he said.

Chen said that in Southwest China, there are ethnic minorities who make crafts similar to batik in Surakarta.

That’s why he considered that a cooperation between China and Surakarta needs to be developed.

“So there will be a cultural exchange.”

Chen invited batik craftpersons in Surakarta to participate in the Shanghai Expo on May 1.

Surakarta Mayor, Joko Widodo, welcomed the offer.

“It is also a city promotion,” he said.
