TEMPO Interactive, Yogyakarta:The Indonesian Tour Guides Association will apply a special requirement for tour guides in Yogyakarta. Not only must they possess a license, they must also score 550 on their English language as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test. This is the criteria now required of companies hiring them.
“Tour guiding is a professional job, just like lawyers or journalists. Therefore, they must have the same TOEFL requirement,” said Indonesian Tour Guides Association’s regional chairman, Andi Mudhi'uddin, last Saturday.
By adding the TOEFL requirement, according to Andi, tour guides’ language competence will improve, and their livelihood will also increase. There are 412 licensed tour guides currently registered in Yogyakarta. “In addition, there are around 60 unregistered guides,” he said.
