Komodo Island has slipped to the 17th place in the race for a place among the world’s new seven wonders of nature.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jero Wacik said Sunday concerns about security in the country might have caused the decline.
“To stay in contention for the new wonder status we have to keep national security intact,” Jero told Antara after closing the Sasando cultural festival in the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) capital of Kupang.
The East Nusa Tenggara island, home to endemic Komodo dragon, was ranked sixth among 28 finalists in the provisional standings in August. The island only trailed Iquazu Falls, the Amazon, the Great Barrier Reef, Angels Falls and Galapagos.
Jero called on the public to vote for the island via online at www.new7wonder.com to keep the island’s hopes of winning the world’s recognition alive.
The official declaration of the new seven wonders of nature will be in 2011.
