Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia Mgr. Leopoldo Girelli, accompanied by Bishop of Manado Mgr. Josef Suwatan and five other bishops in Eastern Indonesia, inaugurated a cathedral in Manado in a Holy Mass on Saturday.
The inaugural ceremony was marked with the anointment of the alter and walls of the church and the burning of incense by Mgr. Leopoldo with the assistance of the other bishops as Mass celebrants.
North Sulawesi Governor Sinyo H Sarundajang in his address said the inauguration of the cathedral added the facilities of faith to Manado and was expected to help promote belief in God.
The church construction committee chairwoman Marietta Kuntag said the Manado Cathedral was designed to accommodate 800 to 1,000 worshipers.
