Borobudur at dawn – quiet and peaceful (JP/Sunita Sue Leng)
Hundreds of Buddhist followers from around the world began the three-day Monlam mass prayer rite on Friday, requesting a peaceful world, in front of the Borobudur Buddhist monument in Magelang, Central Java.
Event coordinator Welly Karlan said Monlam, which means “road to peace”, was an annual prayer event that had been celebrated by Buddhists for thousands of years.
The Borobudur monument and Buddha’s birthplace in India are the only two venues that are allowed to hold Monlam mass prayers, Welly said.
